Abbotsford House

We were approached by the client after they had already engaged a previous designer but weren’t happy with the result. We looked at the previous design and advised the client that we didn’t think that it maximised the potential of the site nor did it fully take advantage of the water views from the first floor.

We took a completely difference approach to the design and challenged the clients as to their perception of what made a great family home. We located the Living, Dining and Kitchen areas on the first floor to take advantage of the water views as that was where the family spent the majority of the time. We created a two storey high atrium space (Library/stairwell) that brought light down to the ground floor and formed the central hub around which all the other spaces revolved. This also enabled you to look right through the building at the first floor level and provide cross-ventilation throughout the entire house.

The raked ceilings and highlight windows in the Dining/Kitchen meant that it is a light filled space throughout the day. Overall there is a feeling of lightness and a dramatic sense of space and volume throughout the house.

We spent a considerable amount of time carefully designing all the various spaces and detailing the different elements, creating a blend of textures and materials like polished concrete, raw recycled brickwork, natural timber, exposed steel and natural stone. As a result, the house feels both edgy but also homely and comfortable at the same time.
